Carry On Learning
In the event of a school closure or your inability or your instructor’s inability to attend class, communication with your instructors will be crucial for exploring alternatives for participating in their class.
Here are the top five things you may need to successfully participate in your courses: clear communications, internet and device access, knowledge of Canvas, familiarity with cloud resources, and a commitment to spend time in your online classes daily.
Communicate and Collaborate
Contact your instructors via SJNY email or look for communication from your instructor.
Find out how your face-to-face class instructor will be handling your coursework remotely.
If you do not have the required technology and access, be proactive in communicating this to your instructor and in finding solutions.
If your instructor is using Zoom to hold class meetings, take a look at Students: Joining a Zoom Meeting.
Create study groups with fellow students
Utilize Google Meet for a video meeting to collaborate with other students.
Internet and Device Access
If a face-to-face class is changed to be offered in an online format, consider the following to be prepared.
Ensure you have access to the Internet.
Ensure you have access to a computer or a mobile device. This device should include:
Audio - At a minimum, ensure you have speakers and a microphone; however, we recommend a headset or earbuds (with mic).
Video - Ensure you have a webcam, either built into your computer or an USB webcam.
Canvas
If your instructor is using Canvas for class sessions, access your course(s), by logging into the MySJNY Portal and select the Canvas link located under SJC Applications area. The Dashboard (main page) should contain your current courses; however, clicking on the Courses button will direct you to a full list of your courses.
Canvas courses need to be published in order for you to see them. If you cannot see your course on your Canvas dashboard or Courses menu, reach out to your instructor to make sure it has been published.
Ensure you are getting instructor notifications and announcements by checking your notification preferences in Canvas.
Communicate with your instructor promptly if you need accommodations in terms of due dates, quiz times, or accessibility concerns.
If your instructor is providing feedback on electronically submitted assignments, you can view the feedback within the Grades link. Once within Grades, click on the title of the assignment and then click on the View Feedback link.
If your instructor is using Kaltura video, you must update browser settings for viewing. Please see the following instructions: Kaltura Known Issues and Resolutions.
Kaltura Info for Students: If your instructor is requesting for you to create video and post to an assignment or discussion, please see these instructions.
Support for Canvas
If you have an issue or concern with Canvas, consider the following resources:
Canvas Student Guide - Detailed help pages.
Canvas Overview Video - Video about the Canvas Dashboard, Global Navigation links, and how to navigate a course.
Canvas Support (Students) - 844-725-7348 or Live chat with Canvas Support

Mobile Access to Canvas
Canvas Student: Canvas Student allows students to access their courses and groups using a mobile device. Students can submit assignments, participate in discussions, view grades and course materials. The app also provides access to course calendars, To Do items, notifications, and Conversations messages. Download the Canvas Student app on Android and iOS devices.
Cloud Resources
Files
File Types: Most often, you will be asked to submit PDF or Office files. Office 365 and GoogleDocs allow you to save your file as PDF files.
As an SJNY student, you have access to Office 365 and G Suite.
These tools are also available as apps for Android and iOS.
You have access to download Microsoft Office for up to 5 devices.
Tip: Always save your documents before turning them in online. Consider downloading your files to an offline location/your computer as a precaution.
Virtual Application Lab (VAL)
St. Joseph’s University offers a VAL (Virtual Application Lab) to provide a private cloud solution for SJNY's academic applications. This will provide students with access to software that has traditionally been available only in SJNY campus computer labs.
Time Commitment
Daily Check-in: Expect to check your email and Canvas courses daily. Reading announcements and other notifications are crucial to having a successful online experience.
Time: Expect to spend as much time, if not more time, engaging with your class commitments.
Synchronous Options: Take advantage of any online office hours offered.
Communicate: Take the time to promptly communicate via Canvas or email with your professors or classmates if you have questions.
Ask for feedback or clarification.
Be open to phone communications.
Support: Before spending too much time on tasks, be sure to reach out for assistance.
