Carry On Working
In the event that routine work or academic functions are disrupted due to prolonged campus or building closures, you may find it necessary to work from off campus. We provide a variety of services to connect you with colleagues and students remotely so that work can continue uninterrupted.
In preparation, you should make sure you have tested your access to the following equipment at home:
Laptop or desktop computer.
Microphone – this may be built into your laptop or computer, or you may use an external device such as a USB microphone or headset. If you’re looking to purchase a microphone, Zoom has the following recommendations.
Webcam – a camera may already be built into your laptop, but you can also use an external USB camera for video conferencing. If you’re looking to purchase a camera, Zoom has the following recommendations.
Internet – either commercially provided (ex., Time Warner, Optimum, FiOS), or a wireless hotspot through your mobile phone.
If you need access to Microsoft Office at home, more information on how to download and access Office 365 can be found on the portal.
Be prepared! It’s best to know these options will work for you before you actually need them. Test access to your equipment and resources at home before the need arises and contact us if you have any questions or issues.
If you do not have equipment at home that meets these standards, please consult with your supervisor.
Communicate and Collaborate

Gmail check your SJC email regularly to stay connected.
Zoom video conferencing makes it easy for you to meet with students or colleagues. You can share screens and meet via phone or computer. See Zoom - Download and Install for instructions on how to install Zoom. See Using Zoom from a Desktop or Mobile Device for instructions on use.
Logging into Zoom and Hosting a Meeting: This video will walk you through using the host features of Zoom when you are the host of a meeting. To ensure you have full host functionality when hosting a Zoom meeting, you need to log into Zoom before entering your meeting.
Zoom Bombing and How to Avoid
You have probably read about a new form of trolling in which a participant uses Zoom’s screen sharing feature to interrupt meetings and classes. This is known as Zoom Bombing. Unfortunately, this has started to happen in the remote classroom environment here at St. Joseph’s University.
Please see the following document on Zoom Bombing and How to Avoid
Google Hangouts Meet allows you to video conference with up to 100 students or colleagues at one time.
Access Your SJC Phone/Voicemail
Even when you are away from the office, there are several options for accessing your calls and voicemail.
Call forwarding
Press the top right button next to the phone display, that has an icon of a circular arrow
Then choose one 'Immediate forward'
Once chosen, it will ask you to dial the station number you would like to forward to
For an External line - Dial the 10-digital phone number starting with a 91 (i.e. 916316875100)
For an Internal line - Dial the 4-digit extension (i.e. 5100)
The system will then tell you that the program has been accepted.
Accessing voicemail remotely
For Brooklyn users, dial: (718) 940-5399
For Long Island users, dial: (631) 687-4599
Once connected to the voicemail system, it will ask for a mailbox number which is your 4-digit extension (i.e. 5100)
Then it will ask you for your password.
After you input your password, you can navigate through the system just as you would if you were at your desk using your phone.
Accessing MySJC Applications and Files
Most SJC resources, such as Canvas, Slate, G Suite, and Office 365 can be accessed directly from the MySJC Portal.
Network Drives and Colleague Access
Services that do require the use of VPN include: Network (H and S drives), access to Colleague, and to connect remotely to an on campus computer using Remote Desktop.
The Vice Presidents are working on a business continuity plan for their respective areas, and they will determine who needs VPN access. If you are approved you will receive further information on how to access the needed resources.
Google Drive/OneDrive
When you save your files in Google Drive or OneDrive, you can always access the latest version of your files no matter where you’re located as long as you’re connected to the internet. Keep in mind that confidential or restricted information should not be stored in Drive or OneDrive.
Use caution in storing information on Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or any cloud service provider. Consider issues like those outlined below before storing data:
Privacy rules and regulations (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.)
The safety of PNPI (personal non-public information such as SSNs, bank account information, etc.)
The value of your intellectual property to your department and to the College
Requirements imposed by non-SJC owners of intellectual property you are using
To facilitate accessing needed files, we recommend uploading them to Google Drive or OneDrive.
